The House of Balliol

A Partial Genealogy

Timeline

Following the death of Margaret, the Maid of Norway, Edward I (Longshanks) of England was recognized as the overlord of Scotland. In 1292, he awarded the Scottish crown to John Balliol. However, Scottish opposition to English domination led to revolt. John surrendered to Edward in 1296 and abdicated the Scottish throne. There was no Scottish king for another ten years.

Edward Balliol, the son of John, was set up by the English as the King of Scotland during the reign of David II but he was unable to rule and fled Scotland for England in 1339.
