Union Workhouse, Milnthorpe, Westmorland

The workhouse in Milnthorpe catered to the old, the infirm, and unmarried mothers with their children. Hannah Bainbridge was one of these unmarried mothers. The following excerpt describes the sad end of her third pregnancy, a girl named after her:
Hannah Bainbridge Died 26 April aged 31 hours. Born Sunday the 24 April 1831 and the Whole of the Intistines of this strange Child was outside of the Body and had Been so from its first formation as Reported by the Surgions who examined it - Mr Parsons and Mr Armistead.
