Abbreviation: | Gal |
Genitive: | Galli |
Origin: | Petrus Plancius, 1612 |
In his 1612 celestial globe, Dutch astronomer and cartographer Petrus Plancius (1552–1622) introduced a number of new constellations, including the rooster Gallus. Unfortunately, it was stuffed into a rather crowded corner of the sky, between Canis Major and the poop deck of the Argo, and it was soon forgotten by stellar cartographers.
