Obituary : Franciscus Ignatius Stellpflug
Francis I. Stellpflug Dies in La Crosse at 96
Lennard Stellpflug and members of his family were called to La Crosse by the
death of Francis I. Stellpflug, father of the Gale man, who died Nov. 26
at the age of 96. Funeral services were held Friday from St. Mary's
church in La Crosse, conducted by the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Robert Congdon.
Burial was in the Catholic cemetery. The Stellpflug family in Gale dates
back to the arrival of Mr. and Mrs. John Stellpflug, who came from
Germany with the first German settlers here. The son Francis was born in
that country Aug. 28, 1844. A son Clement was born at sea on the voyage
across the Atlantic. The family first settled in Milwaukee and alter
came to the town of Gale and homesteaded land which is now the Mrs. Alex
Hale farm, previously owned by John A. Stellpflug and later by his son
John. The son Francis bought what is now the Leslie Gartner farm and
other tracts when he set out for himself. The Francis Stellpflug Sr.
family retired from the farm in the Grant district more than 50 years
ago, going to La Crosse. There the father was active in various lines
until he attained a great age. Until a few years ago he drove a car.
Even after his 90th year he was as active as a man in the 70's and took
keen interest in affairs. Other surviving members of the family are a
son William, of Tremepealeau, and four daughters - Mrs. Joseph
Leinfelder, Mrs. Joseph Stuber, Mrs. J. R. Dunne, and Clara Stellpflug,
all of La Crosse; also a son, Charles. There are 20 grandchildren and 31
great-grandchildren.
